Sicilian Defense

Overview

The Sicilian Defense (1. e4 c5) is the most popular and statistically highest-scoring response to 1. e4. Black immediately fights for the center with a flank pawn, creating asymmetric positions that offer winning chances for both sides.

• Black trades a c-pawn for White's e-pawn to gain a central majority after an eventual ...d5.
• White often attacks on the kingside while Black seeks counterplay on the queenside and the semi-open c-file.
• The Open Sicilian (2. Nf3 and 3. d4) leads to the sharpest and most theoretical lines.
• Anti-Sicilian systems like the Alapin (2. c3) and Grand Prix (2. f4) offer White simpler play.

History

Named after an early analysis from Italy, the Sicilian became a world-class weapon through the games of Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, and Magnus Carlsen. The Najdorf Variation was Fischer's lifelong favorite.
