CastlingCastling is a special chess move where the king moves two squares toward a rook on its starting square, and that rook moves to the square the king crossed. It is the only move that lets a player move two pieces at once, serving to improve king safety and connect the rooks.CheckCheck is a condition in chess where a player's king is under direct attack by an opponent's piece. The player whose king is in check must immediately escape the threat by moving the king, blocking the attack, or capturing the attacking piece. Failure to escape check is not allowed.CheckmateCheckmate occurs when a player's king is in check and there is no legal move to escape the attack. The game ends immediately when checkmate is delivered, and the player who delivers it wins. Checkmate is the ultimate objective of a chess game.StalemateStalemate is a position in chess where the player whose turn it is to move has no legal moves available but is not in check. ForkA fork is a tactic in chess where a single piece attacks two or more enemy pieces simultaneously, forcing the opponent to save one while losing the other. Knights are especially effective at forking because they can attack pieces that cannot attack them back due to their unique L-shaped movement.PinA pin is a tactic in chess where a piece is attacked and cannot move without exposing a more valuable piece behind it to capture. An absolute pin involves the king behind the pinned piece, making it illegal to move. A relative pin involves a lesser piece shielding a more valuable one.SkewerA skewer is a tactic in chess where a valuable piece is attacked along a line, and when it moves out of the attack, a less valuable piece behind it is exposed and captured. It is essentially the reverse of a pin, with the more valuable piece in front rather than behind.Discovered AttackA discovered attack is a tactic where a piece moves out of the way, revealing an attack from another piece behind it on the same line. The moving piece can simultaneously create its own threat, making it extremely difficult for the opponent to handle both attacks at once.Double CheckDouble check is a special form of discovered attack where both the moving piece and the uncovered piece give check to the opponent's king simultaneously. The only way to escape a double check is to move the king, since blocking or capturing can only address one of the two checks.Back-Rank MateA back-rank mate is a checkmate pattern where a rook or queen delivers mate along the opponent's first (or eighth) rank, trapping the king behind its own pawns with no escape squares. This pattern typically occurs when the defending king has castled and the pawns in front have not been advanced.Smothered MateA smothered mate is a checkmate delivered by a knight in which the king is unable to escape because it is completely surrounded (smothered) by its own pieces. Unlike deflection, which pulls a piece away from a key duty, a decoy draws a piece toward a particular vulnerable position.OverloadingOverloading is a tactic in chess where a single defending piece is given too many defensive responsibilities to handle simultaneously. By adding a new threat or attacking a target the piece must protect, the attacker exploits the fact that the overloaded piece cannot cover all its duties.X-RayAn x-ray (or x-ray attack) is a tactic in chess where a long-range piece exerts influence through another piece occupying the same line. The attacking piece indirectly defends a square or targets an enemy piece behind an obstruction, as if seeing through the intervening piece with x-ray vision.ZwischenzugA zwischenzug (German for "in-between move") is an unexpected intermediate move inserted into an apparently forced sequence. Instead of making the expected or obvious recapture or response, the player interposes a surprising move — often a check or threat — that improves their position before completing the expected sequence.DesperadoA desperado is a tactic where a piece that is certain to be captured first inflicts maximum damage by capturing enemy material or creating threats before it is taken. Rather than accepting a passive loss, the doomed piece goes on a final rampage to extract the best possible compensation.Trapped PieceA trapped piece is a chess piece that has no safe squares to retreat to and is destined to be captured. Trapping an opponent's piece, particularly a bishop or knight that has ventured too far into enemy territory, is a common tactical theme that wins material without any sacrifice.InterferenceInterference is a tactic in chess where a piece is placed on a square that disrupts the coordination between two or more enemy pieces. Forks are one common form, but a double attack can also combine a threat to a piece with a threat of mate or promotion.Greek Gift SacrificeThe Greek gift is a classic bishop sacrifice on h7 (Bxh7+) that rips open the castled king's shelter, typically followed by Ng5+ and Qh5 with a winning attack. It is one of the most important attacking patterns to know.Perpetual CheckPerpetual check is a sequence of endless checks that the defender cannot escape, forcing a draw by threefold repetition. It is a vital saving resource for the side that is worse or down material.Clearance SacrificeA clearance sacrifice gives up material to vacate a square, file, or diagonal that another piece urgently needs. The sacrificed piece is in the way of its own army, so removing it unleashes a decisive threat.SacrificeA sacrifice is a move that deliberately gives up material — a pawn, piece, or exchange — in return for a non-material advantage such as a strong attack, a passed pawn, or exposure of the enemy king. A sound sacrifice is backed by concrete calculation or compensation, not merely a hope.CombinationA combination is a forcing sequence of moves — often involving a sacrifice — that leads to a concretely favorable result, such as winning material or delivering checkmate. Unlike a single tactic, a combination usually links two or more tactical motifs (for example a deflection followed by a fork) into one calculated line.

FianchettoA fianchetto is a chess opening strategy where a bishop is developed to the second square of the adjacent knight file (g2 or b2 for White, g7 or b7 for Black) after advancing the corresponding pawn one square.
