The Pirc Defense (1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6) is a hypermodern defense where Black allows White to build a strong pawn center, then seeks to undermine it with piece pressure and pawn breaks. The resulting positions are sharp and highly complex.

Named after the Yugoslav grandmaster Vasja Pirc, this defense became popular in the mid-20th century. It has been used at the highest level by Spassky, Kramnik, and Grischuk.
