Born November 30, 1990 · Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen
Magnus Carlsen is a Norwegian grandmaster widely regarded as one of the greatest players in chess history. A prodigy who earned the grandmaster title at 13, he became the youngest world number one in 2010 and has held that ranking almost continuously since — the longest unbroken run at number one in FIDE's history. His 2882 rating from May 2014 remains the highest ever recorded.
Won the title from Viswanathan Anand in 2013 and defended it three times before declining to defend it again in 2023, citing a lack of motivation to prepare for a single opponent.
Carlsen is famous for a universal, endgame-first style: he steers games into balanced-looking positions early, often sidestepping the sharpest theoretical lines, then grinds down opponents through superior technique and stamina in long games where a small edge is enough.
vs. Viswanathan Anand — World Chess Championship, Chennai, 2013
Carlsen won the match 6½–3½ to become the 16th undisputed World Champion at age 22.
